Petition: Mayor Walsh, meet with community groups about Suffolk Downs redevelopment

“Particularly now that the Trump Administration is rolling back efforts to further fair housing laws, the city must redouble its efforts in this regard.” -Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights

Dear Mayor Walsh:

We represent City of Boston residents in solidarity with working class East Boston residents who have recently sent you a letter requesting an emergency meeting with you and representatives of the BPDA to discuss grave concerns about the BPDA board’s scheduled Feb 13 vote on the Suffolk Downs PDA.

As the letter from a coalition of grassroots East Boston organizations sent on Jan 10, 2020 to Ms. Rojas and Mr. Czerwienski said, “the proposed project would essentially create a predominantly segregated neighborhood, with housing costs and rents for the vast majority of units prohibitively expensive for Boston’s households of color, the disabled and other protected classes.” And “[a]pproving a new, essentially segregated neighborhood in Boston, as set forth in the Suffolk Downs proposal, would violate BPDA’s duties under its enabling act and regulations, as well as the City of Boston’s fair housing obligations, including its duty to affirmatively further fair housing.”

The issues we are most concerned with are the amount and type of affordable housing in the project and the measures that the developer and the city will take to mitigate the heightened displacement pressure in East Boston caused by this project.  This is a matter of great urgency, and we need your leadership to ensure that current and future East Boston residents will not be harmed and can benefit from the largest housing development in Boston’s recent history.

Sincerely,

Sinceramente,
